The PROFESSIONAL DELUXE MODEL will coil a stretch of about 30 feet.
The ECONO WINDER MODEL will make a coil spring around nine inches in length.
You can do sculptures, jewelry, baskets, wall pieces and many other things. Coil the first coiling a second time around a thin rod. These in themselves make wonderful neckpieces.
OR, coil the coil above a third time. You can do this by adding a core wire into the coil above. Another option is to have no core wire. With no core wire the coils open up to make them look like a double helix. The pictures on the right and left are examples of a piece with no core wire.
How can the Deluxe Models coil such long lengths of wire?
The Gizmo was initially designed to make beads. But staring me in the face was its potential to coil long pieces of wire. Two problems had to be solved. There would be wire flopping around on the left side and wire flopping around on the right side.
The Professional Deluxe has been designed so that after you coil a stretch of wire, you loosen the chuck and shove the coiled wire into it. It then comes out of the handle end. The Deluxe Model has a spool to store the coiled wire. Make a hook as shown and hook it inside the spool. Then turn the crank to take up the slack.
In your kit will be a fishing swivel. Hook the tail of the core wire into one of the eyes. Take a second piece of wire and wire it into the other eye. You can then wire the second piece to the back of a chair or to the outrigger unit.
NOW FOR THE HIGH TECH PART--Coil several feet of wire. Go to the chair and pull it toward the Gizmo. Then feed the wire into the chuck and follow the directions for the storage of that wire for your specific model. Then you will have to push the chair away from the Gizmo to create tension on the wire.
The Coiling Gizmo® works with all kinds of metal: Copper, Brass, Silver (nickel, sterling, fine), gold
... even piano wire.
What follows is an estimate of the wire lengths used when coiling longer pieces metal over core or "Mother" wire.

The formula to find the amount of wire you need is to first look at the outer wire gauge and the mother wire gauge on the chart.
- Determine in inches how long you want the coiled length to be.
- Divide that number by the number appearing in the column "COILED LENGTH PRODUCED."
- Multiply that number by 24 inches.
This will determine the length of wire that you need for the outer wire.
There is no "Best" gauge. It is a matter of taste, and overall effect you'd like to achieve. The thicker wire gauges produce large, masculine looking jewelry. For men's jewelry, we suggest a 18 gauge core or "Mother" wire with a 20 gauge outer wire.
The Econo Winder can handle wire as heavy as 18 gauge on the thinner crank rod, and 16 guage for the thicker crank rod. Whatever metal you use, particularly with the thicker metal, it should be fully annealed or dead soft.
To achieve a more delicate look, try a 24 gauge wire over a 20 gauge core wire. The key to coiling small wire gauges is proportion. The outer wire needs to be thinner, or equal to the Mother wire. We suggest that the Mother wire is no smaller than 22 gauge.
The Professional Deluxe Coiling Gizmo® comes with a one year parts and labor guarantee.
The Econo Winder comes with two sizes of crank rods, a "U" bracket to hold the rods and an instruction manual.
The Professional Deluxe comes with 4 jump ring rods, 1 Allen wrench, 1 fishing swivel, 1 ring clamp for guiding wire, 1 "L" bracket for tail-stock piece, a Deluxe Gizmo and 1, instruction manual.(You will need to supply 2 "C" clamps).
The Econo Winder sells for $14.00 with a roll of coloured wire.
The Professional Deluxe sells for $234.00.
That's up to your imagination. We've seen beads that combine yarn and wire, or that are made of beads threaded onto the coiled wire. People also mix coiled wire with polymer clay...Our best advice is EXPERIMENT!
Both Gizmo models are virtually maintenance free. The Econo Winder® requires no maintenance. Occasionally, the screws on the The Professional Deluxe need tightening; therefore, an Allen wrench is included in the kit. In addition, the threads on the shaft need periodic oiling.
FOR A REAL TIME SAVER get a rock tumbler and put steel shot in it with burnishing soap in water. Several hours of tumbling will shine up the surface. This treatment will also shine up any metal quickly and easily.
